Vietnamese Music!
Music class at the arts preschool! Living abroad in Vietnam was more than a travel experience and more than a teaching experience, it was a learning experience. Moving to a new country can be daunting, however once you are faced with the beauty of the culture that fear dwindles and you are able to fully submerse yourself.
Semana Santa!
Semana Santa in Guatemala is a very important celebration for what we here in Canada refer to as Easter. It is Guatemalan tradition to spend days making alfombras (carpets) of flowers, sawdust, and grass in the streets and on Easter Sunday walk through them! In my preparatoria (kindergarten) class we made this one together at school!
Field Trips!
I believe that place based learning and field trips are some of the most difficult and frustrating experiences for teachers but the most beneficial experiences for learners! Don’t let the daunting task of organizing a field trip ever stop you from taking your class on one because it is beyond valuable for them. At the schools I worked at in Vietnam, field trips were a very important part of the education. Here we went to a ceramics factory outside of the city where the children were able to see how ceramics and pottery are made, they were able to make their own tea cups, and take home a little ceramic figurine of their choosing!
Palfish!
Online teaching is something that I never thought I would get involved in as it seemed really out of my element however, I started working with Palfish and I fell in love with it! Online classes give learners the ability to get one on one attention, it is interactive, and it allows them to work on their technological skills outside of a classroom. When teaching online, I worked mainly with learners ages 3-11 and learned many techniques of how to keep learners engaged and on task. This experience led me to then taking another online teaching job with Cambly, where I worked with adult learners, and has prepared me for the reality nowadays of online classroom teaching.
